Site Visit Summary

While studying this unit i have attended five construction sites. Two of them have been at Laverton in Melbourne with a company called Australand. I met with a construction manager on these sites and he took me on a tour of them. One of the jobs was just at the frameing up stage of construction of a portal frame. It was interesting seeing the cranes at work. I also visited a site where they had finished the frame and were constructing the office at the front. This gave me a good view of precast concrete pannels etc. I was lucky enough to get two full sets of drawings that matched these two sites. The project manager went through these drawings and really helped me gain a good understanding of the construction process. I was also able to visit a site at the airport with the same company. This time they were very busy as they were prepareing for the infill slab inside the warehouse etc so i was only there briefly. It was good to see the action at these sites as i was able to see pritty much the whole on site construction process between the three. I also went to ATEX steel in Moolap Geelong who are a private steel fabricateing firm. Here i was able to the the process they go through to weld the end plates and cleats onto beams. They were not so keen on me taking photos but did give me very detailed explanations of there work and a few working drawings These were very hard to scan up as they were in A3 size. I also attended a very small site in Ballarat which was the same sort of construction just on a small scale. I jumped the fence for this one so didnt really get to go over the site for all that long. Following are some of the photos i got at all of the site visits.

Steel Portal Frame Construction

This is a drawing of part of a steel portal structure. It is fully labelled with all the parts that are used to construct this type of building. It is hard to see the cleats and purlins correctly however they are labelled so hopefully you get the gist of it.

Bunnings Warehouse

For this weeks activity i have choosen Bunnings warehouse situated in Warnponds just below the Deakin campus. This is an example of a long span, single story building. The photo shows a large overview of the building and and helps demonstrte the massive size of it.
This is a steel column that is at one of the ends and in the centre of the buliding. This column would be one of the main structual elements in the building. The picture also shows two large rafters bolted to the cetre column.
This is a close detail of a very complicated section of the building. It shows round beams bolted to a centre column which provide bracing at the edge of the building. You can also see a large rafter that is also bolted to the centre column.
